Montessori traditionally introduces cursive first because the flowing movements are more natural for young children and help prevent letter reversals. Cursive letters are also more distinct from each other, making them easier to recognize and remember.

Sandpaper letters work best alongside sand tray writing, where children practice the same movements in sand, and phonetic games that reinforce letter sounds. The moveable alphabet typically follows, allowing children to build words before they can write fluently.
