About

A wooden frame with brass hooks for hanging the hundred and thousand bead chains. The thousand chain is several metres long and there is no honest way to store it except hung: coiled in a box it tangles, and a tangled chain is one a child will not choose. Hanging also keeps its length visible, which is the argument the material makes, since a thousand you can see the whole of is a different thing from a number. Chains sold separately. Wood with brass hooks, for ages 3 to 12.

Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.

This storage frame serves as a bridge between Practical Life and Mathematics, teaching children that caring for materials is integral to the learning process. The visible, accessible display respects the child's need for beauty and order while supporting their mathematical journey from concrete to abstract understanding. By maintaining the chains in pristine condition, children develop reverence for materials and responsibility for their environment. The frame's design allows children to independently select, use, and return materials, fostering the cycle of activity that is fundamental to Montessori education.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the frame on a low shelf at child's eye level. Ensure the area has sufficient space for children to remove and replace chains. Position near the mathematics area for easy access during bead chain activities.

  1. 1

Show the child how to approach the frame with slow, deliberate movements

Model walking around the frame to avoid bumping the hanging chains
  2. 2

Demonstrate lifting a chain by grasping the numbered tag with thumb and two fingers

Emphasize gentle movements to prevent tangling
  3. 3

Show how to support the chain with the non-dominant hand while removing from hook

Keep the chain slightly taut to maintain its shape
  4. 4

Carry the chain with both hands to the work area

Walk slowly, watching where you're going
  5. 5

After use, demonstrate returning the chain by holding the tag and carefully placing on the correct hook

Count the hooks from left to right to ensure proper placement
