About

The traditional addition tables for the numbers one to nine, with the second addend running in numerical order: the table of one goes 1+1 through 1+9, and so on. Ordered like this, every answer is one more than the answer above it, so a child can work down a page almost without adding. That is deliberate. The first pass is about seeing the shape of a table, not about recall, and it has to be easy enough that nobody gives up on page one. Forty booklets. Paper and cardstock, for ages 3 to 12.

Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.

The Montessori Method

The Addition Tables Booklet serves as a bridge between concrete mathematical manipulatives and abstract number work in the Montessori classroom.

  • Masters addition facts with 5 and 6 as addends through systematic practice
  • Develops computational fluency and automatic recall of basic addition combinations
  • Recognizes numerical patterns and relationships within addition families
  • Builds concentration through focused work on isolated number sets
Read More

This booklet's systematic presentation of equations with 5 and 6 as addends allows children to discover patterns within addition facts through repeated practice. Each worksheet page in the booklet isolates specific number combinations, enabling focused concentration on one mathematical relationship at a time. The booklet format permits children to work at their own pace, completing pages as they master each set of facts. Through filling in these structured worksheets, children internalize addition combinations that become automatic responses, freeing their minds for more complex mathematical thinking. The Addition Tables Booklet transforms the memorization of facts into a process of discovery, as children observe relationships between numbers while completing each equation. This paper-based material provides the repetition necessary for mastery without the fatigue that comes from copying problems, allowing the child's energy to focus on computation rather than writing setup.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the Addition Tables Booklet on a table mat with a pencil. Ensure the child has worked with concrete addition materials like the addition strip board. Open to the first page showing equations with 5 as an addend.

  1. 1

Show the child the first equation (5+1=__) and demonstrate how to count or calculate the answer

Initially, the child may use fingers or counters to find answers - this is perfectly acceptable
  2. 2

Guide them to write the answer in the blank space provided

Ensure proper pencil grip and number formation while maintaining focus on the mathematical concept
  3. 3

Continue through the page systematically, completing each equation in order

Observe for patterns the child discovers, such as answers increasing by one
  4. 4

When the page is complete, review the answers together, noting the sequence

Point out the pattern of consecutive numbers in the answer column
  5. 5

Proceed to subsequent pages as the child demonstrates readiness and interest

Some children complete one page per day, others may do several - follow the child's pace
