Once a child can match and grade the bells by sound, the next question is how to write one down, and a staff is a strange answer: a note's pitch becomes its height on a page, which is a spatial metaphor nobody would guess. Boards let that metaphor be built by hand, one note placed at a time, before it has to be read at speed. Bells sold separately. Wood with paint, for ages 3 to 12.
