Bells Staff Boards Set
Made by Nienhuis Montessori · shipped by Heutink International (Netherlands) About the maker
A set of staff boards for the further exercises of notation with the bells. Once a child can match and grade the bells by sound, the next question is how to write one down, and a staff is a strange answer: a note's pitch becomes its height on a page, which is a spatial metaphor nobody would guess. Boards let that metaphor be built by hand, one note placed at a time, before it has to be read at speed. Bells sold separately. Wood with paint, for ages 3 to 12.
“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.”
The Bells Staff Boards bridge the concrete sensorial experience of the Montessori Bells with abstract musical notation, addressing the child's developmental need to connect physical pitch exploration with symbolic representation.
- Understanding the relationship between pitch height and staff position
- Reading and placing notes on treble and bass clef systems
- Developing visual discrimination for line and space notes
- Connecting auditory pitch memory with visual notation

These wooden boards with precisely printed staff lines provide a visual framework where children can map the sounds they hear onto written musical language. The hole-punched design reflects the Montessori principle of prepared environment, ensuring the staff boards remain accessible and organized for independent musical exploration. By placing note markers on the smooth wood surfaces, children discover how the vertical position on the staff corresponds to the pitch relationships they've already internalized through bell work. The Bells Staff Boards honor the child's sensitive period for order by presenting musical notation as a logical system rather than arbitrary symbols. This material emerges at the precise developmental moment when children seek to preserve and communicate their musical discoveries through written form.

How to present it
Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.
Place the Bells Staff Boards on a music rug alongside the Montessori Bells. Have note markers or moveable notes ready in a small basket.
- 1
Play middle C on the bells and show its position on the staff board
Use consistent language: 'This sound lives on this line' - 2
Invite the child to play ascending notes while placing markers on corresponding staff positions
Move slowly to allow visual-auditory connection - 3
Remove markers and ask child to place them while you play specific bells
Start with just three notes before expanding - 4
Transition to naming notes and finding their staff positions without playing bells
This builds notation memory independent of sound
