Bells staff boards, a set of two, give the Montessori bells their written form: the child places each bell on the staff where its tone belongs. Sounding a bell, listening and then setting it on its line or space turns something heard into a position that can be seen, and a bell left in the wrong place sounds wrong beside its neighbours. Matching sound to position is the first step from hearing music to reading it, taken with the hands rather than through a theory lesson. What is settled here is read again later on paper, where the same places on the staff stand for the same tones. Used together with the bells in the sensorial area from about three years.
