Cylinder Block No. 4

Cylinder Block No. 4 is a solid wooden block with a row of knobbed cylinders that keep the same diameter while their height increases. The child returns each cylinder to its own socket, and the material itself reveals a mistake: a wrong choice leaves one cylinder standing proud. The knob is held between three fingers, so alongside visual discrimination the work rehearses the hold used later for a pencil. For children from about three years, usually after the first blocks in the series.
