About

An enamel candleholder of 13 cm across, for the practical life work of lighting and putting out a candle. It is the rare exercise where the real risk is part of the point: a child who has been shown how to strike, hold and snuff a flame is safer around candles than one who has only been kept away from them. A wide enamel base catches wax and cannot itself catch light. Enamel on metal, for ages 0 to 6.

Education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.

The Montessori Method

The Enamel Candleholder serves as a bridge between the child's desire for meaningful work and their developing capacity for careful, controlled movements. This metal holder with its distinctive ring-shaped handle transforms the simple act of carrying a candle into an exercise in concentration and grace.

  • Develops pincer grip strength through ring handle manipulation
  • Refines gross motor control while carrying weighted objects
  • Builds concentration through careful, deliberate movements
  • Enhances spatial awareness and balance coordination

The enamel coating on the sturdy base reflects light, drawing the child's attention to their careful movements while the thumb rest guides proper grip formation. In Montessori practice, the candleholder addresses the child's need to participate in real, purposeful activities that require precision and care. The weight of the metal base demands deliberate movement, while the ring handle isolates the pincer grip that will later hold a pencil. Through carrying and placing the enamel holder, children develop an awareness of their movements in space and the control needed for delicate tasks.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the enamel candleholder on a tray with a small candle (LED recommended for young children). Position at child's eye level on a shelf, ensuring clear walking paths to designated candle locations.

  1. 1

Demonstrate sliding thumb through the ring handle while fingers support underneath

Show how the thumb rest naturally positions the hand for control
  2. 2

Lift the holder slowly, keeping it level and close to body

Count silently to three before moving to help child slow down
  3. 3

Walk heel-to-toe to the designated spot, eyes on the candle

Practice the walk without the holder first if child struggles
  4. 4

Lower the holder smoothly onto the surface using both hands

Demonstrate bending at knees rather than waist for stability
  5. 5

Return empty holder to its tray following the same careful process

Emphasize that empty holder requires same respect as full
