About

A booklet for the adult explaining how to use the Montessori grammar material. The grammar boxes are one of the places where the adult's sequence matters more than the child's preference: the boxes are worked in a fixed order, one part of speech at a time, and each new box keeps everything already met in play instead of replacing it. This is the document that sets that order out. The grammar boxes themselves are separate items.

The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'

The Montessori Method

The Grammar Boxes embody Montessori's vision of language as a living, dynamic system that children can explore through sensorial experiences. By transforming abstract grammatical concepts into concrete, manipulable materials, children discover the function of words through movement and experimentation.

  • Identification and classification of all parts of speech through sensorial exploration
  • Understanding the function and relationship between words in sentences
  • Development of analytical reading skills and sentence structure awareness
  • Ability to construct varied and grammatically correct sentences

This approach honors the elementary child's reasoning mind and need to understand the 'why' behind language structures. The color-coding system provides a visual and sensorial key that helps children internalize grammatical patterns independently. Through systematic exploration with the Grammar Boxes, children develop both analytical thinking and creative expression, understanding that grammar is not a set of arbitrary rules but the logical structure that gives power and precision to human communication.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place Grammar Box 1 (Article & Noun) on a mat with corresponding color-coded cards. Ensure explanation card is readily accessible. Have objects or pictures ready that correspond to the noun cards.

  1. 1

Introduce the black article cards (a, an, the) and explain their function as determiners

Use concrete objects to demonstrate how articles specify which noun we mean
  2. 2

Present the black noun cards, showing how they name people, places, things, or ideas

Start with concrete nouns before moving to abstract ones
  3. 3

Have child read phrase cards combining articles and nouns, then build these phrases with individual cards

Let child discover that articles always precede nouns in English
  4. 4

Invite child to create their own article-noun combinations using the blank cards

Encourage both logical and creative combinations to explore language possibilities
  5. 5

Progress systematically through remaining Grammar Boxes as child masters each concept

Allow ample practice with each box before introducing the next
