Fraction Circles cut the same circle into ever more equal parts, so a half, a third or a fifth can be lifted out, compared and fitted back into a whole. A first piece of work is simply to empty one frame, mix the pieces on the table and put them back, counting aloud how many of them it takes to fill the circle again. A child handles fractions as objects long before they turn up as numbers, and the frames themselves say whether a piece belongs where it was put. The same material later carries naming, equivalence and the first adding of fractions. For children from three years.
“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.”
