About

Thirty six labels for the plane geometric shapes in the geometric cabinet. Thirty six is every shape in the cabinet, which matters more than it sounds: a partial set teaches a child that some shapes have names and others do not, and the ones without names are the ones they stop looking at. A complete set says that everything in the drawer is nameable, including the shapes an adult would struggle to name. For ages 3 to 6.

The hands are the instruments of man's intelligence.

The Montessori Method

The Geometric Beginning Labels exemplify Dr. Montessori's principle of isolating difficulty by presenting language work separately from the initial sensorial exploration of geometric forms. Following the three-period lesson structure, these materials bridge the sensorial and language areas, allowing children to match abstract symbols (words) to concrete experiences they've already internalized through work with the Geometric Cabinet.

  • Recognition and reading of fundamental geometric vocabulary
  • Development of visual discrimination between similar word forms
  • Strengthening of the pincer grip through precise card handling
  • Building connections between concrete sensorial experiences and abstract language

This material respects the child's sensitive period for language while building upon their sensorial knowledge, creating meaningful connections between experience and vocabulary. The clear, simple presentation honors the child's need for order and precision, while the self-correcting nature of the material supports independent learning and the development of executive function skills.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the acrylic holder on a tray with labels arranged in order. Ensure child has worked extensively with Geometric Cabinet. Work at a table with good lighting.

  1. 1

Invite the child, showing how to carry the tray with two hands

Model slow, deliberate movements to set the pace for careful work
  2. 2

Remove 3-4 labels, placing them in a row. Read each label clearly, pointing under each letter

Use your dominant index finger to track under words from left to right
  3. 3

Invite child to match labels to corresponding shapes from Geometric Cabinet

Start with contrasting shapes like circle, triangle, and square
  4. 4

Conduct three-period lesson: 'This is...', 'Show me...', 'What is...'

Only progress to period three when child masters period two
  5. 5

Child works independently, matching all labels to shapes

Observe without correcting; child will self-correct through repetition
