Geometric hierarchy of numbers shows the decimal system as a series of solids, each one made from ten of the one before it. Set out in order from the smallest piece to the largest, the row lets a child hold two neighbouring levels side by side and weigh in the hands how much ten of the one makes of the other. Instead of being told that a thousand is large, the child holds the difference and watches the pattern of unit, ten and hundred return at every level. A large presentation material for the older children of the three to six group, and a direct preparation for their later work with the decimal system.
“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.”
