Herb Greenboards
Made by Nienhuis Montessori · shipped by Heutink International (Netherlands) About the maker
Four small greenboards of 7 by 5 cm with chalk, to be used as plant markers. A herb bed a child has planted looks identical to a herb bed a child has not planted, until the labels go in. Writing the name and pushing it into the soil is what makes the planting theirs, and chalk means a marker can be rewritten when the row is replanted rather than thrown away. Wood with slate and metal, for ages 0 to 6.
“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.”
The Herb Greenboards fulfill the young child's urgent need to express thoughts through written symbols during the sensitive period for writing.
- Develops proper pencil grip and hand pressure through chalk manipulation
- Refines letter formation skills through repeated practice on slate surfaces
- Strengthens fine motor control needed for precise writing movements
- Builds visual-motor coordination through bounded writing spaces

These mini chalkboards create an inviting space where letter formation becomes a sensorial experience, the gentle resistance of chalk against slate provides crucial feedback for developing proper pencil grip and pressure control. The wooden frames define a clear workspace that helps children understand boundaries, while the portable design allows writing practice to happen anywhere in the prepared environment. The integrated clothespin clips transform these boards into dynamic communication tools, enabling children to display their work or create labels for classroom materials. Unlike paper, the erasable slate surface removes the permanence that often inhibits early writing attempts, encouraging repeated practice without waste or judgment. The Herb Greenboards bridge the gap between sandpaper letters and paper writing, offering a transitional surface where errors become learning opportunities and every stroke contributes to the refinement of hand control necessary for fluent writing.

How to present it
Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.
Place one Herb Greenboard at the child's table with small pieces of white chalk and a damp cloth for erasing. Position the board so the clothespin clip faces upward.
- 1
Demonstrate holding the chalk between thumb and first two fingers, making a simple vertical line on the slate
Show how light pressure creates thin lines while firmer pressure makes bold marks - 2
Invite the child to trace their first initial, starting at the top as learned with sandpaper letters
If needed, lightly guide their hand for the first stroke, then allow independent practice - 3
Show how to erase with the damp cloth using circular motions, preparing the board for new work
Let the child discover that partial erasing creates interesting effects for artistic expression - 4
Demonstrate using the clothespin to display the board or attach a small card with their name
This transforms the board into a personal communication tool or work label
