About

A wooden holder for three pencils. Three is a working number rather than a storage number: it is what a child takes to a piece of work, and a holder that offers exactly three settles the question of how many before it is asked. Pencils stand upright, which means returning one is the same movement as putting it away, and a holder that small can travel to the table with the work. The pencils are separate items.

The senses, being explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge.

The Montessori Method

The Holder For 3 Pencils addresses the critical developmental need for organized writing preparation in the Casa dei Bambini environment.

  • Development of tripod grip through repeated pencil retrieval
  • Strengthening of pincer grasp muscles
  • Visual discrimination between writing implements
  • Order and organization in work preparation
Read More

Its three parallel grooves position pencils at precisely the angle that encourages children to naturally adopt the tripod grip when reaching for a writing instrument. This wooden holder transforms the simple act of selecting a pencil into a preparation for writing, as the angled presentation invites the child's thumb and index finger to meet at the optimal pinching point. By housing exactly three pencils, the holder creates a limited, manageable choice that prevents overwhelming the child while still offering selection. The grooves themselves serve as indirect preparation for writing, as children must use controlled finger movements to place and retrieve pencils from their designated spaces. This repeated practice of precise placement strengthens the same small muscles needed for pencil control, making the holder an essential bridge between the practical life exercises and formal writing activities in the Montessori classroom.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

4 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the holder on the child's work table with three different pencils (varying in thickness or color) resting in the grooves, points facing away from the child

  1. 1

Demonstrate removing one pencil using thumb and index finger, grasping where the groove naturally positions your fingers

Move slowly to highlight the pincer grasp
  2. 2

Show how to hold the pencil with proper tripod grip, maintaining the position from pickup

Keep the demonstration wordless to allow full concentration on hand movements
  3. 3

Return the pencil to its groove, sliding it gently into place

Emphasize the satisfying fit of pencil to groove
  4. 4

Invite the child to remove and replace each pencil

Observe grip development without correcting unless necessary
