The Horizontal Dowel in its serpentine variation bends the path a disc has to travel, so the toddler follows the curve with the wrist instead of simply pushing straight ahead. A disc held at the wrong angle stops on the bend and goes no further, which tells the child to turn the hand rather than push harder, and no adult has to say a word. It is the step taken once the straight dowel offers no resistance any more, and it asks for rotation rather than more force. For children under three who already thread onto a straight dowel.
“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.”
