Horizontal Dowel Variation - Straight

Horizontal dowel in the straight variation turns stacking on its side: the toddler pushes each piece along a rod that runs away from the body instead of upwards. One hand holds the base steady while the other lines the hole up with the rod, so the two hands take on different jobs at the same time. The movement crosses the midline and asks the wrist to rotate, which is harder than it looks and exactly why this material comes after the vertical dowel. Threading later asks for the same coordination with nothing at all to guide the hand. Made for children under three working at a low shelf.
