About

Exercise cards with divider tabs in a wooden box, extending the hundred board. The board itself is one very long task: fill a hundred squares in order, which a child does a handful of times and then considers finished. These cards turn the same board into many short tasks instead, so it stays on the shelf for another year and keeps being chosen. Short work that can be finished in one sitting is what a child returns to. Hundred board sold separately. Wood and laminated paper, for ages 3 to 6.

Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world.

The Montessori Method

The Hundred Board Activity Set embodies Maria Montessori's insight that children construct mathematical understanding through concrete manipulation before abstract reasoning.

  • Recognition and sequencing of numbers 1-100
  • Understanding of the decimal system structure
  • Discovery of number patterns (skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s)
  • Visual discrimination of odd and even numbers
Read More

This wooden storage box with numbered dividers transforms the exploration of numbers 1-100 into a sensorial experience where children physically handle each number, discovering patterns through direct interaction. The Hundred Board's grid structure reveals the decimal system's architecture - showing how numbers grow by tens horizontally and by ones vertically. Activity cards within the set isolate specific numerical relationships, allowing children to discover skip counting, odd and even patterns, and multiplication facts through their own investigation. The wooden dividers create order within the storage box, teaching children that mathematics itself is a system of organized relationships. By arranging numbers on the hundred board grid, children internalize the base-ten structure that underlies all arithmetic operations.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the wooden storage box on a work mat. Remove the hundred board grid and place it flat. Arrange the numbered dividers in order within the box. Set out one activity card to begin focused exploration.

  1. 1

Invite the child to build the hundred board by placing tiles 1-10 in the first row

Let children discover that each row begins with a number ending in 1
  2. 2

Continue building row by row, observing patterns as they emerge

Point out how the tens digit changes with each new row
  3. 3

Select an activity card focusing on a specific pattern (e.g., counting by 5s)

Use a small pointer to trace the pattern on the completed board
  4. 4

Remove only the numbers that follow the pattern, leaving gaps

The visual gaps help children see the skip counting rhythm
  5. 5

Return materials to the wooden storage box using the numbered dividers

Storing by tens (1-10, 11-20, etc.) reinforces decimal grouping
