Introduction to the Decimal Symbol brings the written side of the decimal system to a child who has already held its quantities: the sign for a unit, a ten, a hundred and a thousand. Once the golden beads have made those amounts tangible, the symbols are laid beside them and the child sees that a thousand uses the same digits as one, only in another position. It is the bridge between decimal quantity and place value, for children from three years.
“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'”
