About

The Set of Knobless Cylinders contains four colour-coded sets of ten graduated wooden cylinders. Children build towers and rows, compare across sets and order the cylinders by dimension, refining visual discrimination, hand control and concentration on the way to mathematics. Painted solid wood, ages 3-6.

The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'

The Montessori Method

The Knobless Cylinders embody Dr. Montessori's principle of isolation of difficulty, presenting variations in dimension without the distraction of color differences within each set.

  • Visual discrimination of height and diameter variations
  • Preparation for mathematical concepts of gradation and seriation
  • Refinement of precise hand movements and pincer grasp
  • Development of concentration and attention to detail

This material bridges the concrete sensorial exploration of the Cylinder Blocks and the abstract mathematical concepts of the decimal system. Through manipulation of these cylinders, children internalize relationships of size, developing what Montessori called 'mathematical mind' - the human tendency to think in precise, orderly ways. The removal of knobs requires refined finger control and deliberate placement, preparing the hand for writing while the mind absorbs mathematical relationships. The color-coding system (red, yellow, blue, green) creates visual order while allowing children to discover patterns and relationships independently, fostering the self-construction of knowledge that is central to Montessori education.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place one box on a table mat. Sit to the child's right. Remove lid with deliberate movements, placing it silently under the box. Remove cylinders randomly, placing them on the mat.

  1. 1

Grade the cylinders from largest to smallest, using visual discrimination

Move slowly, comparing cylinders side by side to emphasize the discrimination process
  2. 2

Build a tower with red cylinders (varying in height and diameter)

Start with the largest base for stability, demonstrating careful placement
  3. 3

Create a horizontal series with yellow cylinders (varying in height only)

Align bases precisely to highlight height differences
  4. 4

Arrange blue cylinders (varying in diameter only) concentrically

Center each cylinder carefully to create a balanced circular pattern
  5. 5

Combine sets to create patterns and discover relationships

Let the child explore freely after initial presentations
