Long Division in a child's hands
Long Division takes the operation apart and shows it as sharing out: the dividend is set out by place value, given away step by step, and whatever will not divide stays visible as the remainder. Because every exchange happens in front of the child's eyes, the written procedure that follows is a shorthand for something already understood rather than a rule to memorise.
