About

Exercise cards with divider tabs in a wooden box, extending the number rods. The rods are usually the first mathematics a child ever meets, at three, and they are also one of the few materials still useful at six, because length carries quantity in a way counters never will. These cards are what bridges that gap: without them the rods get exhausted in a term, with them they keep producing work for three years. Number rods sold separately. Wood and cardstock, for ages 3 to 6.

Education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.

The Montessori Method

The Number Rods Activity Set embodies Montessori's belief that children construct mathematical understanding through direct manipulation of concrete materials. Each wooden rod's segmented design allows children to physically handle quantity, making abstract numerical concepts tangible through touch and sight.

  • Understanding quantity relationships through visual and tactile comparison of rod lengths
  • Developing number sequence knowledge from 1-10 through ordered arrangement
  • Building foundation for addition by physically combining shorter rods to match longer ones
  • Connecting concrete quantities to abstract number symbols using equation cards
Read More

The equation cards accompanying these rods bridge sensorial exploration with symbolic representation, reflecting Montessori's careful progression from concrete to abstract learning. The Number Rods' precise measurements and visual segments enable children to discover mathematical relationships independently, comparing lengths, combining quantities, and internalizing number sequence through repeated handling. This set addresses the developmental need for concrete mathematical experiences before children encounter abstract numerical operations. The wooden rods' weight and texture provide essential sensory feedback that reinforces quantity concepts as children arrange, compare, and combine different rod lengths. By manipulating these segmented rods alongside their equation cards, children build a foundation for understanding that numbers represent real quantities, not merely symbols on paper.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Arrange the wooden rods horizontally on a mat from shortest to longest. Place equation cards in a basket nearby. Ensure adequate floor space for rod arrangements and combinations.

  1. 1

Introduce the shortest rod as 'one' by holding it and counting its single segment. Place it at the top left of the mat

Use slow, deliberate movements to emphasize the counting process
  2. 2

Present each successive rod, counting segments aloud while running your finger along each division. Arrange in stair formation

Pause between counting each segment to allow visual processing
  3. 3

Demonstrate combining two shorter rods to equal a longer one (e.g., 2-rod plus 3-rod equals 5-rod)

Physically align the rods end-to-end before comparing to the target rod
  4. 4

Introduce equation cards by matching them to corresponding rod combinations

Place cards directly below the rod arrangements for clear visual connection
  5. 5

Invite the child to create their own rod combinations and find matching equation cards

Start with simple combinations like 1+1 before progressing to larger numbers
