Puzzlemap Italy

The Puzzle Map of Italy lets a child take the country apart region by region and rebuild it by hand. Pieces come out onto a mat first and go back one at a time, and tracing the edge of a region with a finger before it drops into place is what fixes the outline. Because each piece is handled on its own, shape and position settle in memory in a way a printed map never manages: the boot, the islands, the neighbours that fit above it. A region put in the wrong place stops the next one from fitting, so the map corrects the child instead of the adult doing it. From three years it works first as a puzzle, later with name labels and control maps for reading and writing the regions.
