Sandpaper numerals: US version give the figures 0 to 9 a rough surface the child traces with two fingers in the direction of writing. Touch, sight and the spoken name of the number arrive together, so the symbol is stored as a movement rather than a picture to copy. The rough surface keeps the finger on the figure, so a stroke that wanders off is felt before anyone points it out, and the same movement carries over to the pencil later on. The US version follows the numeral shapes used in American schools and is introduced from about three years, alongside work with quantity.
“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”
