About

A small metal watering can in red, with a handle on the back and a second one on top. Two handles is the whole design: the top one carries the can and the back one tilts it, so a child pours by turning a wrist instead of raising an arm, and the water goes where they are looking. Watering is the practical life work with the longest delay between care and result, which is exactly why it is worth doing properly.

The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.

The Montessori Method

The Small Metal Watering Can serves as a bridge between the child's desire to participate in real work and their developing physical capabilities. Its red metal construction and dual handles acknowledge that children between birth and three years need tools sized for their bodies while engaging in authentic tasks. The perforated sprinkler head transforms water pouring from a simple transfer exercise into purposeful plant care, meeting the young child's need to contribute meaningfully to their environment.

  • Bilateral hand coordination through dual handle grip
  • Controlled wrist rotation and arm extension
  • Visual-motor planning for accurate water placement
  • Understanding of water absorption and plant needs

This watering can's long spout requires children to coordinate both hands, judge distance, and control the flow of water, challenges that match their developmental drive for precision and order. Through watering plants with this specially designed can, toddlers experience the direct relationship between their actions and the living world, satisfying their need to understand cause and effect while building the foundation for environmental responsibility.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the watering can on a low shelf near a water source. Set up a designated plant watering area with 2-3 small potted plants on a child-height table. Include a small pitcher for filling the can and a cloth for spills.

  1. 1

Show the child how to carry the empty can using both handles

Model walking slowly and keeping the spout pointed forward
  2. 2

Demonstrate filling the can halfway using the pitcher

Point out the water level through the sprinkler holes
  3. 3

Walk carefully to the first plant, holding with both hands

Pause before pouring to let the child observe your controlled movements
  4. 4

Tilt the can slowly until water begins flowing through the sprinkler head

Count aloud '1, 2, 3' to show appropriate watering duration
  5. 5

Return the can to upright position and move to the next plant

Let the child notice how the can feels lighter after watering
