Smelling Bottles hand the sense of smell an exercise of its own, with scents prepared in pairs that a child matches by nose alone. One bottle is opened and breathed in, then the second set is searched until the same scent turns up, and the pairs are checked at the end. Work usually starts with only a few clearly different scents and grows harder as the nose gets better at telling near neighbours apart. Isolating one sense this way also builds the vocabulary for describing what was smelled, work that fits the sensorial area from age three, beside the other pairing exercises the child already knows.
“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”
