Spindle box:US version

The Spindle Box in the US version carries the numerals 0 to 9 above compartments that a child fills with loose spindles. Counting becomes something the hand can feel: nine spindles gathered into one palm weigh differently from three, and the empty compartment under the zero shows what nothing looks like. The child works from left to right and the supply runs out exactly as the last compartment is filled, so a spindle left over or one missing reports the error before any adult does.
