Tens Bead Box holds nine bars of ten and nine single beads, exactly what a child needs to build every number from 11 to 99. To make forty two the child lays out four bars, counts them ten, twenty, thirty, forty, and then adds two loose beads until the name and the quantity meet. Set beside the numeral cards, ninety-nine stops being a word and becomes nine tens and nine units that can be counted, exchanged and rearranged. The card names the number and the beads either match it or they do not, so the checking is done by counting rather than by asking. The beads are nylon and take daily handling in a group, which suits 3 to 6 year olds who have the teen numbers behind them and are moving on to the tens.
“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.”
