About

A table built for one job: holding the bells or the tone bars at working height, with a raised back edge so nothing rolls off, and an angled lower shelf that keeps the second set within sight. Auditory work needs a fixed place more than most, because the material has to stay in a known order for the child to hear the difference rather than hunt for the next bar. Two storage levels mean the set can be left mid-work and returned to. Plywood and laminated wood, for ages 3 to 6.

The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'

The Montessori Method

The Tone Bar/Bell Table serves as essential furniture for organizing the auditory discrimination materials within the Montessori sensorial curriculum.

  • Develops organized work habits through consistent instrument placement
  • Enhances spatial awareness when arranging materials on the defined surface
  • Builds independence in accessing and returning musical instruments
  • Strengthens gross motor control when reaching different storage levels
Read More

This specialized table's child-height work surface enables independent access to tone bars and resonator bells, allowing children to engage in focused listening exercises without adult assistance. The table's protective raised edge prevents instruments from sliding off during pairing and grading activities, while its angled lower compartment maintains proper bell positioning to preserve their tonal clarity. By providing dedicated workspace for musical materials, this furniture piece establishes a distinct auditory work area that signals to children where sound exploration occurs. The table's two storage levels accommodate the complete set of bells or tone bars along with mallets and control materials, creating an organized environment that invites repeated practice. This purposeful furniture design recognizes that auditory refinement requires both physical space for movement and acoustic separation from other classroom activities.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

4 steps to mastery
Preparation

Position the table against a wall in the sensorial area, away from high-traffic zones. Ensure adequate space on all sides for children to move freely while carrying instruments.

  1. 1

Place tone bars or bells in the angled lower compartment, arranging them in order from lowest to highest pitch

Use felt strips between instruments to prevent contact and preserve tone quality
  2. 2

Store mallets horizontally on the upper storage level, handles facing outward for easy grasping

Provide a small tray for mallets to define their storage space
  3. 3

Keep pairing or grading work mats rolled and stored on the lower shelf when not in use

Label storage areas with small cards showing where each item belongs
  4. 4

Position any control cards or notation materials on the upper shelf for easy visibility

Use small baskets to organize supplementary materials by activity type
