About

Three part cards for tools, with a real photograph of each. Tools are named by what they do, so this set teaches more than words: a child who learns that a plane shaves and a chisel cuts has learned two verbs along with two nouns, and the picture explains the difference without a demonstration. Useful in a room where real tools are used and equally useful in one where they are not. Durable plastic. In English.

The senses, being explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge.

The Montessori Method

Tools 3 Part Cards fulfill the young child's need to connect language with concrete reality during the sensitive period for vocabulary acquisition.

  • Develops precise vocabulary for common tools and their functions
  • Strengthens visual discrimination through detailed photographic matching
  • Builds early reading skills by associating written labels with images
  • Enhances classification abilities by grouping tools by purpose
Read More

The photographic images of actual tools bridge the gap between the child's sensorial experiences and abstract language symbols. Through matching picture cards with their corresponding labels, children build mental order while expanding practical life vocabulary. The three-part format, picture cards, separate label cards, and control cards combining both, allows children to progress from recognition to reading at their own developmental pace. This systematic approach to nomenclature work satisfies the child's drive for classification and categorization between ages 3-6. The laminated cardstock construction withstands repeated handling as children return to these cards throughout their language development journey, building confidence with each successful matching experience.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

4 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the picture cards in a column on the left side of a mat. Stack the label cards face down in a basket. Keep control cards separate for self-correction.

  1. 1

Invite the child to identify each tool in the picture cards, discussing any familiar ones

Use precise vocabulary: 'hammer' not 'thing that hits'
  2. 2

Take one label card and read it aloud, then match it to its corresponding picture

Run your finger under the text left to right as you read
  3. 3

Continue matching all labels to pictures, allowing the child to take over when ready

If unsure, encourage the child to use the control cards for verification
  4. 4

Once complete, use control cards to check work together

Let the child discover and correct any mismatches independently
