Twenty photographs making forty cards of things used for transport, each isolated on a white background. Transport is the opposite case to vegetables: a child cannot be shown a real aeroplane or a real ferry, so photographs are not a substitute for the thing, they are the only access to it. Red and blue borders sort the halves back into piles, and no vocabulary is printed so a pre reader works undistracted. The three part nomenclature is sold separately. Place the Transportation Matching Cards in a basket on the language shelf. Ensure cards are organized with all pairs together. Choose a work mat in a quiet area with good lighting.

Invite the child to bring the basket to the mat. Remove 3-4 pairs of cards, mixing them face-up on the mat
Start with vehicles the child knows from daily life - 2
Select one card and name the vehicle clearly: 'bicycle.' Place it at the top left of the mat
Use precise vocabulary, 'automobile' rather than 'car' when appropriate - 3
Scan the remaining cards saying 'bicycle' while looking for its match. When found, place it beside the first

Continue matching remaining pairs, naming each vehicle as you work
