About

Twenty photographs making forty cards of things used for transport, each isolated on a white background. Transport is the opposite case to vegetables: a child cannot be shown a real aeroplane or a real ferry, so photographs are not a substitute for the thing, they are the only access to it. Red and blue borders sort the halves back into piles, and no vocabulary is printed so a pre reader works undistracted. The three part nomenclature is sold separately. Durable plastic, pre cut with rounded corners, for ages 3 to 6.

Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.

The Montessori Method

Transportation Matching Cards serve as a concrete bridge between the child's immediate experience and the wider world of human movement and travel.

  • Visual discrimination through matching identical transportation images
  • Classification skills by sorting cards according to pink or blue frames
  • Vocabulary acquisition of transportation terms through concrete image association
  • Fine motor control through careful handling and placement of laminated cards
Read More

The laminated cards with their pink and blue frames create distinct visual categories that children aged 3-6 can physically manipulate while building vocabulary. Each transportation image on these cards represents real vehicles children encounter in their environment, from bicycles they see daily to airplanes they hear overhead. The matching aspect of these cards fulfills the young child's drive for order through pairing identical images, while the color-coded frames add an additional classification dimension. By handling these sturdy laminated cards repeatedly, children internalize transportation vocabulary through tactile experience combined with visual recognition. The cards' clear illustrations within colored frames provide the isolation of difficulty essential to Montessori language work, allowing children to focus on one concept, vehicle identification, without distraction. This material addresses the child's need to name and categorize their expanding world while developing the visual discrimination skills necessary for later reading.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the Transportation Matching Cards in a basket on the language shelf. Ensure cards are organized with all pairs together. Choose a work mat in a quiet area with good lighting.

  1. 1

Invite the child to bring the basket to the mat. Remove 3-4 pairs of cards, mixing them face-up on the mat

Start with vehicles the child knows from daily life
  2. 2

Select one card and name the vehicle clearly: 'bicycle.' Place it at the top left of the mat

Use precise vocabulary, 'automobile' rather than 'car' when appropriate
  3. 3

Scan the remaining cards saying 'bicycle' while looking for its match. When found, place it beside the first

Model the scanning pattern left to right, preparing for reading direction
  4. 4

Continue matching remaining pairs, naming each vehicle as you work

Allow the child to take over when they show readiness
  5. 5

After matching, review all pairs with the child, encouraging them to name each transportation mode

Introduce new vocabulary naturally through three-period lessons
