The 1st Cylinder Of Block No. 2 + 3 replaces the first cylinder in either of those two cylinder blocks, so one lost or damaged piece does not retire the whole material. Its knob keeps the three-finger grip that later guides the pencil, and the exact size restores the contrast the block relies on for self-correction. With the set complete again the child can lift every cylinder out, mix them on the table and put them back, and a cylinder left over at the end shows the mistake without an adult pointing it out.
