Cylinder Block No. 2 keeps every cylinder at the same height and varies only the diameter, so the eye has one thing to judge: width. The child lifts each cylinder by its knob, compares it against the sockets and returns it where it belongs; a cylinder that will not sit shows the error without a word from the adult. Once the block is easy the same cylinders can be ranged in a row from narrowest to widest, or replaced with the eyes closed, so the hand takes over from the eye. Sensorial work from age three that also trains the three-finger grip later used for the pencil.
“The hands are the instruments of man's intelligence.”
