Storage Box: For Brown Stair Prisms
A box of nineteen wooden prisms, each 1 by 1 by 20 cm, in a natural wood finish, used to compare and calculate the volume of the brown stair. The brown stair looks like a lesson about thickness until a child starts filling its prisms with these: the thinnest step takes one, the next takes four, then nine, and the squares appear in the hands rather than on a page. Nineteen is enough to build the comparison for any step in the stair. Hardwood with a plywood base, for ages 3 to 6.

How to present it
Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.
Place the box on a low shelf accessible to children. Ensure prisms are arranged in order from thickest (10cm²) to thinnest (1cm²). Use a large work mat on the floor.

Invite the child and show how to carry the box with two hands to the mat
Model slow, deliberate movements to emphasize care - 2
Remove prisms one at a time from thickest to thinnest, placing randomly on mat
Use both hands to feel the weight difference of each prism - 3
Select the thickest prism and place it at the left side of the mat
Run fingers along the edges to emphasize the dimension - 4
Compare remaining prisms to find the next thickest, building the stair from left to right

When complete, view the stair from different angles
Stand at the thin end to see the 'staircase' effect clearly - 6
Dismantle by returning prisms to the box in reverse order
