The Golden Bead Chain Of 100 lays a hundred out as one line the child can walk along, counting in tens from one end to the other. The chain is stretched straight on the floor first and then counted group by group, so the child arrives at the hundred by their own steps rather than being told where it ends. Counting by tens stops being a rhyme learned by heart and turns into a distance the hand and the eye can measure. Part of the golden bead material on the mathematics shelf, in use from around three years, and the ground on which the longer chains are counted later.
“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'”
