What the child does
Golden Bead Chain Of 1000 in a child's hands
Golden bead chain of 1000 lays the thousand out along the floor, where its sheer length says more than a figure on paper ever could. The child counts the ten-bars from one end to the other and, simply by walking beside the chain, discovers that ten hundreds make a thousand. Counted in this way the chain is also long practice in skip counting by tens, the habit that later carries the multiplication tables. Strung on nylon beads, it extends the golden bead work in the decimal system from about three years.
