About

The three centimetre cube from the pink tower, a single replacement piece. The tower is ten cubes from one centimetre to ten, and each one changes in all three dimensions at once, which is why the difference between neighbours grows so fast: this cube holds twenty seven of the smallest, and the next one holds sixty four. A tower missing a cube cannot be improvised around, because every step is a different size. The complete pink tower is a separate item.

Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world.

The Montessori Method

The Pink Tower embodies Dr. Montessori's principle of isolation of difficulty, presenting the single concept of dimension in three dimensions. This 3cm cube, as part of the complete tower, serves as a concrete representation of the mathematical concept of the cube of numbers. Through sensorial exploration, the child absorbs abstract concepts through concrete manipulation, building neural pathways that later support mathematical understanding.

  • Visual discrimination of three-dimensional size variations
  • Development of muscular memory for weight and dimension
  • Preparation for mathematical concepts of volume and the cube of numbers
  • Refinement of voluntary movement and hand-eye coordination

The material's self-correcting nature allows children to independently discover relationships between sizes, fostering the development of visual discrimination and spatial intelligence. The precise gradation from 1cm³ to 10cm³ provides a materialized abstraction of the decimal system, while the aesthetic beauty and exactness of the pink cubes appeal to the child's natural sense of order and desire for perfection during the sensitive period for refinement of the senses.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place all cubes randomly on a mat. Ensure the work area is clear and the child has observed the complete presentation previously. The 3cm cube should be among the mixed cubes.

  1. 1

Using a three-finger grip, select the largest cube and place it carefully on the mat

Model slow, deliberate movements to emphasize control and precision
  2. 2

Continue selecting cubes in descending size order, stacking each perfectly centered on the one below

Allow the child to self-correct if a cube is not perfectly aligned - avoid intervening
  3. 3

When placing the 3cm cube (8th in sequence), pause slightly to ensure precise placement

This smaller cube requires more refined motor control - observe the child's grip and concentration
  4. 4

Complete the tower with the 2cm and 1cm cubes

These final cubes test the pinnacle of the child's motor control and visual discrimination
  5. 5

Invite the child to walk around the tower, observing from different angles

This develops spatial awareness and allows appreciation of the harmonious progression
