Thermic Tablet: Polished Marble for Temperature Discrimination
Made by Nienhuis Montessori · shipped by Heutink International (Netherlands) About the maker
One marble tablet from the thermic tablets, 8 x 4 cm, sold as a single replacement. The set is six pairs in felt, wood, steel, cork, glass and marble, and every tablet in it sits at the same room temperature: what the child sorts is not how warm each one is but how fast it takes heat out of the hand. Marble is the far end of that scale, which is why it feels cold when it is not. The complete set in its six compartment box is a separate item.
“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”
The thermic tablets embody Dr. Montessori's principle of isolating a single quality for sensorial exploration.
- Refinement of thermic perception and temperature discrimination
- Development of sensorial memory for thermal qualities
- Enhancement of concentration through focused sensory exploration
- Vocabulary enrichment with precise temperature-related language

By focusing exclusively on temperature perception through identical tablets that differ only in thermal conductivity, children refine their thermic sense with scientific precision. This material demonstrates the Montessori belief that all senses can be educated through systematic exposure to graded stimuli. The marble tablet, as part of the complete set, offers a natural coolness that contrasts with other materials, allowing children to build concrete experiences of temperature differences. Through repeated matching and grading exercises, children develop discrimination, judgment, and the ability to perceive subtle variations in their environment, preparing the thermic sense for practical life applications.

How to present it
Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.
Place the marble tablet on a mat alongside its pair and other thermic tablets. Ensure tablets are at room temperature initially. Have a small cloth nearby for holding tablets.
- 1
Sensitize your wrist by rubbing gently, then touch the inside of your wrist to the marble surface
The wrist is more temperature-sensitive than fingertips - 2
Hold the tablet briefly in your palm, feeling its coolness and weight
Close your eyes to enhance thermal perception - 3
Find the matching marble tablet among the set using only your thermic sense
Alternate between tablets to maintain sensitivity - 4
Grade multiple pairs from coolest to warmest
Allow tablets to return to room temperature between uses
