3-Sided Inset Pencils: Gray
Made by Nienhuis Montessori · shipped by Heutink International (Netherlands) About the maker
A box of twelve three sided inset pencils in grey. Grey is the colour a child asks for once drawing stops being about naming things and starts being about how they look: shadow, stone, weather, the underside of a cloud. It is also the hierarchy colour of the thousands family in the racks and tubes, so it turns up in mathematics as well. Twelve pencils, one colour. The other colours in the range are separate items.
“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”
The 3-Sided Inset Pencil represents Maria Montessori's understanding that writing preparation requires specific muscular development before a child can form letters. The triangular shape of these pencils naturally positions the thumb, index, and middle fingers into the tripod grip, eliminating the struggle many children face with round pencils. When children work with Metal Insets, these gray pencils provide the precise control needed for filling shapes with parallel lines, developing the hand strength and coordination essential for writing.
- Development of proper tripod pencil grip through triangular shape guidance
- Strengthening of hand muscles needed for controlled writing movements
- Refinement of wrist rotation and finger coordination
- Preparation for cursive letter formation through Metal Inset exercises

The ergonomic three-sided design prevents the pencil from rolling while teaching proper grip through its very form. Unlike traditional pencils that children may hold incorrectly, the triangular body guides finger placement without adult correction, allowing children to focus on their drawing movements. The consistent gray graphite marking enables children to see their progress clearly as they practice the controlled hand movements that will later become cursive writing. Each facet of the triangular pencil serves as a tactile guide, helping children internalize the correct grip through repetition during their sensitive period for writing preparation.

How to present it
Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.
Place 3-4 triangular pencils in a holder on the Metal Inset shelf. Ensure pencils are sharpened to a fine point. Have paper squares (14cm x 14cm) available in a basket.
- 1
Demonstrate holding the triangular pencil by placing thumb on one flat side, index finger on the second side, and middle finger supporting from the third side
Let the child feel how the three sides naturally guide finger placement - 2
Show how to trace around a Metal Inset frame with light, controlled pressure
Point out how the triangular shape prevents the pencil from rolling when set down - 3
Demonstrate filling the traced shape with parallel vertical lines, maintaining consistent spacing
Show how the flat sides provide better control than round pencils - 4
Invite the child to choose their own Metal Inset and begin tracing
Observe grip without correcting - the triangular shape will guide naturally
