About

The medium A6 card box, 12,6 x 9,2 x 4,2/6,7 cm. Depth is what separates the three A6 boxes, and this is the middle one: deeper than the small box by three and a half centimetres, which in cards is the difference between one short set and a set with its control cards behind it. The two heights at the end are the box, cut lower at the front so the top card can be read where it stands. Beech. Cards are not included and the other sizes are separate items.

The Montessori Method

In the Montessori prepared environment, the presentation of materials is fundamental to supporting the child's development of order, independence, and concentration.

  • Development of visual discrimination through organized card selection
  • Refinement of fine motor control and pincer grip when handling cards
  • Internalization of order through consistent material placement
  • Independence in accessing and returning learning materials

This activity card storage box embodies the principle of external order leading to internal order. By providing a designated, beautiful container for activity cards, we honor the child's sensitive period for order and their need for consistency in the environment. The open-top design respects the child's developing independence, allowing them to access materials without adult assistance. The natural beech wood and precise solid construction demonstrate the importance of beauty and quality in the environment, as children naturally care for objects that are aesthetically pleasing and well-made. This indirect preparation for reading, writing, and mathematical concepts through organized card work supports the child's absorbent mind during the crucial 3-6 year period.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

4 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the box on a low shelf at child's eye level, containing one set of related cards (e.g., classified nomenclature cards). Ensure cards are oriented consistently with images facing forward.

  1. 1

Model carrying the box with two hands to a work mat or table

Move slowly and deliberately to emphasize care
  2. 2

Gently remove cards with thumb and index finger, placing them in order

Use exaggerated pincer grip to model proper handling
  3. 3

Complete the card activity (matching, sequencing, or reading)

Work from left to right to support later reading directionality
  4. 4

Return cards to box in original order, checking alignment

Take time to ensure cards are neat - this models precision
