A long fabric mat made so the chain of a thousand can be laid out whole on the floor. Without it the chain either does not fit or gets laid across a walkway and stepped on, and either way the counting stops. The mat defines the work as a space that belongs to the child for as long as it takes, which for a thousand chain is a genuinely long time. Rolls up with the chain still in sequence. Clear a long corridor or open floor space. Unroll the mat completely, smoothing any wrinkles. Place the thousand chain cabinet or tray at one end.
