About

The Sri Lanka piece from the Asia puzzle map, sold on its own. An island piece has nothing to lean against: it cannot be slid into place along a neighbour's edge, so the child has to judge where it sits in open space, using India above it as the only reference. That is the first time position rather than shape solves the puzzle, and it is why island pieces are put back last. Silk screened and laser cut. The puzzle map of Asia is a separate item.

Education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.

The Montessori Method

The Sri Lanka puzzle piece isolates one specific landmass from the complex continent of Asia, allowing the young child to focus completely on this island nation's distinctive teardrop shape.

  • Recognition of Sri Lanka's distinct teardrop island shape
  • Understanding of island geography versus continental landmasses
  • Development of pincer grip through control knob manipulation
  • Visual discrimination between land (orange) and water (blue)

By presenting Sri Lanka as a single wooden piece with its own control knob, children can physically lift, trace, and examine this geographic form independently from neighboring countries. The vibrant orange color against blue ocean details creates a clear visual boundary that helps three-to-six-year-olds understand how islands exist as separate land formations surrounded by water. This individual puzzle piece transforms abstract map concepts into concrete, manipulable objects that match the child's need to learn through touch and movement. The control knob positioned precisely on Sri Lanka enables proper pencil grip development while the child explores geographic relationships, making the puzzle piece serve dual purposes in fine motor and cultural curriculum areas.

Activity Guide

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the Sri Lanka puzzle piece on a tray with a blue cloth representing the Indian Ocean. Have the Asia puzzle map nearby for reference.

  1. 1

Invite the child to carry the tray to a work mat

Let them choose the workspace to encourage independence
  2. 2

Demonstrate lifting the piece by its control knob using thumb and index finger

Move slowly to show proper grip
  3. 3

Trace around the wooden piece with your index finger, starting at the northern point

Trace clockwise to establish consistent movement patterns
  4. 4

Place the piece on the blue cloth and discuss how water surrounds islands

Use simple language: 'Land with water all around'
  5. 5

Show how Sri Lanka fits into the larger Asia puzzle map

Let the child discover the matching space themselves
