Sports Block: Small
Made by Nienhuis Montessori · shipped by Heutink International (Netherlands) About the maker
A bamboo sports block, 10 x 6 x 3,5 cm, the small size. Low blocks are where balance work starts: a child steps up three and a half centimetres, which is not far enough to be frightening and is far enough to require a decision about where the weight goes. Set flat on the floor it becomes a mark to stand on or a target to kick towards with the Montessori football. The larger blocks and the football are separate items.
“The hands are the instruments of man's intelligence.”
The Small Sports Block introduces structured movement work into the Montessori environment, where physical development is recognized as foundational to cognitive growth.
- Develops core strength through supported balance positions
- Refines proprioceptive awareness and spatial orientation
- Builds bilateral coordination through symmetric movements
- Strengthens concentration through sustained physical poses

This bamboo block's compact size specifically matches the proportions of children aged 3-6, allowing them to manipulate and position it independently during movement exercises. Unlike adult-sized equipment, the Small Sports Block respects the child's need to work with materials scaled to their body, enabling successful experiences in balance and coordination work. The smooth bamboo surface provides sensory feedback during use, while its weight offers just enough resistance to develop strength without overwhelming young muscles. In Montessori practice, movement materials like this sports block bridge the gap between gross motor activities and the refined movements required for later academic work, recognizing that physical coordination directly influences a child's ability to concentrate and perform precise tasks.

How to present it
Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.
Place the block on a movement mat in an open area. Ensure 3 feet of clear space on all sides. Have the child remove shoes for better grip and sensory feedback.
- 1
Introduce the block by having the child carry it with both hands to the work area
This initial carrying exercise develops respect for the material and practices controlled movement - 2
Demonstrate placing one foot on the block while keeping the other on the ground, holding for 5 counts
Count aloud slowly to help the child gauge time and maintain focus - 3
Show how to step up onto the block with both feet, maintaining balance briefly before stepping down
Stand nearby without touching unless the child requests help - 4
Progress to sitting on the block with feet flat on the floor, practicing tall posture
Place a hand gently on the child's back to guide spinal alignment if needed
