About

A puzzle map of Taiwan, silkscreened and laser cut, with a knob on each piece positioned at that region's capital. Single country maps do work the continent maps cannot: the pieces are counties rather than nations, so a child who has already placed Asia meets the same land again at a resolution where the shapes stop being familiar and have to be looked at properly. Laser cutting keeps the fit exact and replacement pieces available. Wood and painted wood, for ages 3 to 6.

The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.

The Montessori Method

The Puzzle Map of Taiwan serves as a concrete introduction to abstract geographical concepts, allowing children to physically handle and place each administrative region.

  • Develops fine motor control through grasping plastic knobs and fitting wooden pieces
  • Builds spatial reasoning by matching regional shapes to their locations
  • Forms geographical understanding of Taiwan's administrative divisions
  • Strengthens visual discrimination through comparing regional boundaries
Read More

Through manipulating these painted wooden pieces, children build mental maps of Taiwan's political divisions while developing their pincer grasp using the plastic knobs. The blue ocean background surrounding Taiwan's puzzle pieces provides immediate visual understanding of its island nature, making abstract boundaries tangible. Each region's distinct shape and color creates sensory impressions that form lasting geographical memory. The puzzle map bridges the gap between the child's immediate environment and the broader world, as fitting each wooden piece requires careful observation of boundaries and spatial relationships. This hands-on exploration of Taiwan's regions satisfies the young child's need to understand their place in the world through concrete manipulation rather than abstract explanation.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

5 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place the puzzle map on a work mat at the child's table. Have a pointing stick or pencil available. Ensure all pieces are present in the frame.

  1. 1

Invite the child to remove all pieces, starting from the top, placing them randomly on the mat

Model using a three-finger grip on the plastic knobs
  2. 2

Select one piece and trace its outline with your finger, then trace the corresponding space in the frame

Move slowly and deliberately to emphasize the matching process
  3. 3

Place the piece in its correct position, pressing gently to ensure it fits

If it doesn't fit easily, trace both shapes again rather than forcing
  4. 4

Continue with remaining pieces, allowing the child to work independently

Step back once the child shows understanding, intervening only if requested
  5. 5

When complete, admire the whole map of Taiwan together

Use this moment to note the island's shape surrounded by blue ocean
