Mini Dustpan in a child's hands
A mini dustpan in green, powder coated metal, 4,5 x 8 cm. Four and a half centimetres deep is smaller than a hand, and that is deliberate: this pan belongs on the table, at the seed tray, beside the pencil sharpener, in all the places where a full sized dustpan would be absurd and where mess actually happens in a classroom. Small tools make small jobs possible without asking. The other colours are separate items.
Gross Motor Control
Develops hand-eye coordination and controlled movements while collecting swept materials.
Practical Life Skills
Introduces care of environment concepts through real cleaning tools sized for small hands.
Independence
Enables toddlers to participate in classroom maintenance and develop self-reliance.
Concentration
Focusing on collecting all debris into the dustpan builds attention span and task completion skills.
How to present it
Place the green dustpan on a low hook alongside a child-sized broom. Create a designated sweeping area with masking tape square on the floor. Scatter dry materials like rice or beans for initial practice.
- 1Demonstrate holding the dustpan handle with non-dominant hand
- 2Position dustpan at edge of swept pile
- 3Sweep materials onto dustpan with short strokes
- 4Lift dustpan slowly while tilting back
- 5Empty contents into waste basket
3 tips for parents
- Keep home dustpan accessible on low hook near small broom
- Allow child to sweep real spills, accepting imperfect results
- Resist helping unless child requests assistance with positioning
