The Montessori rationale
This set replaces neither the raised bed nor the seeds. A nursery buys those at a garden centre for a few tens of euros. It replaces what a garden centre cannot sell: a place where the harvest is worked with, tools scaled to a child’s hand, and material through which a four-year-old grasps what a root, a leaf and a flower are. The contents follow one cycle: plant, tend, harvest, prepare, clear up. The child goes through the whole sequence from beginning to end, which is exactly the project thinking a technical nursery is after. Responsibility for your own harvest cannot be taught, only lived. Furniture makes up most of the value on purpose. Material with nowhere to be laid out and left half-finished ends up in a cupboard. The set is built around one working station for a small group; a class needing two orders it twice.
