About

Two three piece puzzles: one of circle, square and triangle, and one of three circles in different sizes. The pairing is the design. The first puzzle asks a toddler to tell shapes apart, the second asks them to tell sizes apart within one shape, and doing both back to back is how a child learns that things can differ in more than one way at a time. Three pieces is a length of work a one year old can finish, which is why they finish it repeatedly. Painted wood, for ages 0 to 3.

The Montessori Method

The Multiple Shape Puzzle Set addresses the young child's need to refine visual discrimination and hand-eye coordination through concrete manipulation.

  • Visual discrimination of geometric shapes through matching forms to insets
  • Pincer grasp refinement using the knobbed puzzle pieces
  • Spatial awareness development through rotating pieces to find correct orientation
  • Problem-solving skills through trial and error with shape placement
Read More

Each knobbed piece in this shape sorting puzzle provides immediate sensory feedback as children discover which geometric form fits into its corresponding space. The smooth painted wood surfaces and precisely cut insets create a self-correcting experience where only the correct shape will fit properly into each board opening. This puzzle set's two separate boards allow children to work with varying levels of complexity, matching their developmental readiness for distinguishing between circles, squares, triangles, and other geometric forms. The knobs on each puzzle piece are specifically sized for the pincer grasp, preparing the hand muscles that will later hold a pencil. Through repeated work with these shape puzzles, children build the visual perception skills necessary for later mathematical understanding while satisfying their innate drive to bring order to their environment through matching and sorting activities.

How to present it

Follow the Montessori method of presentation for optimal child development.

4 steps to mastery
Preparation

Place one puzzle board on a low table or work mat. Set the corresponding knobbed pieces in a basket to the right of the board. Ensure the work surface is at the child's elbow height when seated.

  1. 1

Demonstrate removing all pieces from the board using a three-finger grip on each knob

Move slowly and deliberately to model careful handling
  2. 2

Select one piece and trace its edges with your index finger, then trace the matching inset space

This visual-tactile connection helps children recognize corresponding shapes
  3. 3

Gently lower the piece into various spaces until finding the correct fit

Allow the piece to 'tell' you where it belongs through the fit
  4. 4

Continue with remaining pieces, working from left to right

Establish a consistent pattern that children can replicate independently
