Grey is chosen so the child's own pencil is the darkest thing on the page, and the squares are what keep a four digit column straight without anyone ruling lines. Place stamps for the first number in the appropriate grid squares, organizing by place value
Always start with thousands on the left, moving right to units - 3
Perform the operation by adding or removing stamps according to the problem
For subtraction, physically remove stamps; for multiplication, create multiple groups - 4
Exchange stamps when needed (10 units for 1 ten, etc.) using the grid lines as guides
Move stamps up to the next place value row when exchanging - 5
Count the final stamp arrangement and record the answer in the designated space
