The Montessori rationale

Montessori discovered that children as young as four can write, but only when the path is prepared. The sandpaper letters train the hand and eye simultaneously; the movable alphabet lets children express words before they can yet form letters with a pencil; and the tracing tray offers unlimited risk-free repetition. This is the proven path from speech to script.
